Bio[]

Humphrey Bumphrey is the name of a series of recurring television hosts and presenters. He is the host of Uplift with Humphrey Bumphrey where he introduces the subjects and co-presenters and appears as an elderly presenter on Phone in With Ludovic Kennedy. On April 21, 1976, Bumphrey introduces several programs:

  • "Movin' On" - Will discovers Sonny has knocked himself out after recalling an old girlfriend
  • Who's Afraid of Virgin Wool - starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor as a constantly bickering married couple.
  • This Is Your Life - the life of a former hairdresser named Ted and his old girlfriend
  • Sale Of The Half-Century

  • Bumphrey was played first by Benny Hill in Uplift with Humphrey Bumphrey, but on April 21, 1976 played by Paul Eddington, revealing a number of TV show and movie parodies.
  • "Movin' On" was an American TV drama about big rig truckers that ran for two seasons from 1974 to 1976 on the NBC network. It inspired the phrase, "Do it like Pruitt," which hung around as an idiom for thirty years long after the series had ended. Benny plays both Frank Converse (who played Will Pruitt) and Claude Akins (who played Sonny Chandler).
