Duncan Wood is an English writer, director and producer possibly best-known for his collaborations with Tony Hancock for the BBC during the late 1950s and early 1960s, and the British sitcom "Steptoe and Son."
Born on March 24, 1925 in Bristol, England, his first work was on "Great Scott, It's Maynard," followed by "Hancock's Half Hour," "Comedy Playhouse" and "Oh Brother" before directing "Steptoe and Son." He also produced the first series of "The Bed-Sit Girl," and worked with Frankie Howerd, Ken Dodd and Benny Hill, producing Benny's first show and sit com for the BBC. His other work includes "Garrison Theater" and "Great Scott, It's Maynard."
From 1972 to 1973, he was the BBC's Head of Comedy, later departing in 1973 to become Head of Light Entertainment at Yorkshire. He was executive producer for "Life Begins At Forty" and 'The Galton & Simpson Playhouse."
Sadly, he passed away on January 11, 1997 in London, England.
